“Shir Hashirim”

XX Anthology of Georgian translations from 20th century

2025 -"Shir Hashirim" is one of the books of the "Tanakh" (Old Testament). Concerning the genre, it belongs to the category of poetic works and is part of the third section of the Old Testament, "Ketuvim", or the "Writings". According to tradition, the authorship of the book is attributed to the third king of Israel, Solomon. The text, consisting of 8 chapters, includes dialogues and monologues.

This book is significant not only for its history and interpretations, but also for its translations into various languages, including Georgian.

This collection is the first anthology and illustrated printed edition of Georgian translations of the "Shir Hashirim" in Georgia. It includes Georgian translations of the "Shir Hashirim" from the original Hebrew text in the twentieth century by Gertsel Baazov, Nathan Eliashvili, Grigol Peradze, Zurab Kiknadze, Yitzhak David, Shalom David, and Abraam Mamistavlov, as well as a translation by David Tserediani (from a non-original version). All translations are unique, meaningful, and significant for the history and research of the Bible translated into Georgian, and from a historical, culturological and literary point of view and scholarly perspective.
